US helps Samoa fight NCDs

PR - The US Government has given more than WST $100,000 to fund the implementation of two health projects to address Non-Communicable Diseases — Samoa’s biggest health problem.

US Ambassador David Huebner presented two Samoan NGOs with the grant money at a ceremony at the US Embassy in Apia on Thursday.

A $58,000 grant went to the Matuaileoo Environment Trust Inc to fund an outreach program in 10 villages that raises awareness of prevention and control measures for a variety of NCDs.

And a $46,000 grant went to the Fuatino Natural Health Products which will take a communal approach in Faatoia village to effect behavior change and foster an improvement in general health literacy.

Both projects will focus on how to best utilise the local food supply and promote healthy lifestyles that are not only culturally appropriate, but feasible.

Ambassador Huebner highlighted the importance of working together to combat the spread of NCDs and finding practical solutions to the problem.
