It has been 25 years since a Samoan girl competed at the Miss World. Even that, a Samoan girl has never made it past the preliminaries.

Come late next month, Ms Penina Maree Paeu hopes to change all that.

“I am extremely excited to represent Samoa before the world,�? says the beaming 25-year-old.

“This opportunity is such a huge honour and blessing for me, I look forward to the journey ahead.�?

In May, Penina took out the Miss World Samoa crown from three other girls. Doing so,she landed the ticket to represent Samoa at the Miss World pageant in Jakarta on September 28. But she hopes to take it a step further.

“Miss Samoa is an avenue to promote and empower our nation and our people. Thank you Samoa for all the love and support.�?

Born in Samoa but raised in New Zealand, Penina claims origin from several villages. The list includes Vaigaga, Fagaloa, Faleula, Samatau, Lalomalava, Faga, Sapunaoa, and Asaga.
