“..to be truly independent,�? says Prime Minister

In closing the 53rd Independence celebrations Monday this week, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi is reminding the country that celebrating our day of freedom should not be just a day for remembrances but a day of reminder.

“With the sun now slowing setting, we pause to reflect once again on the achievements of yesteryear, and ponder with a hint of uncertainty on what tomorrow might bring to launch us in to the future,�? said the Prime Minister.

“I believe only God knows and only he alone can see far beyond our todays.�?

“The stark reality for Samoa,�? continued government leader, “and perhaps for other Pacific island countries that have acquired sovereignty is that to be truly independent, it is no longer having to rely on the help from other countries, but to be self-sufficient, fully dependent on our own resources, in the confidence that as God is our provider, we can boldly stand on our own two feet and enjoy “True Independence.�?

He noted that for Samoa as a small island developing nation, “we have the challenge of being able to take care of our own affairs.�?

“And we are required to ensure that those young people who marched and waved excitedly this morning are guaranteed jobs to take care of them and their families in the future.�?

He reiterated that Independence Day should be a reminder that there are daunting challenges that lie ahead for leaders and parents. And that challenge is to secure a radiant future for our children.

“Independence Day should revitalize our resolve to continue our mission to create job opportunities for our future generations,�? continued Tuilaepa.

“Government takes into account these challenges and has spearheaded development programmes and the involvement of youth in certain programmes.

“This is to ensure economic resilience and sustainability throughout our very own toils and hard work,�? said the Prime Minister.

An early downpour failed to dampen the mood of thousands who turned up in the wee hours of Monday morning during the flag raising ceremony.

“The radiant smiling faces of the young children were a delight to the guests and spectators,�? applauded the Prime Minister.

As joint chairperson for the 2015 Independence Organising Committee, the Prime Minister complimented all schools, organisations, entertainers and everyone that took part in the celebration.

“Worthy of mentioning is the presence of overseas dignitaries that travelled from abroad to celebrate with Samoa.�?

Guests included American Samoa’s Lt. Governor, Tonga’s Prime Minister and the Titular Head of the Tokelau.
