HAPPY: Magiagi matai and Prime Minister Tuilaepa and his Cabinet greet shake hands after this afternoon’s successful meeting

By Tupuola Terry Tavita

The village of Magiagi this afternoon(yesterday) informed government that they have agreed to install cash power meters in their homes during a meeting with Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

In doing so, Magiagi asked government for assistance in paying their outstanding electricity bill which has accumulated to to millions of tala in 14 years.

Tuilaepa replied that this is not easy as other villages also have outstanding electricity bills.

“Whatever decision we make for Magiagi also is to be applied to other villages who are no doubt watching what comes out of this meeting closely.”

The matter, the Prime Minister, will be left to appointed committees representing government and the village to negotiate.

“The committees will look into issues such as compensation and perhaps, ways for Magiagi to pay their unpaid bills in a reasonable manner. They will then report to Parliament.”

The village also asked if sacked village mayor, government representative Tuiono Leto’afa Keni can be reinstated. This was immediately granted.

The village was well represented by seasoned orator Mataipule So’afa.

“Magiagi has always been supportive of your government Tuilaepa. that support will always remain. We have accepted the cash power system for our village. Many of our sons and daughters work for and hold high positions in government.”

The two parties agreed for cash power meters to be installed starting tomorrow (today). The meeting this afternoon – attended by some 30 matai from Magiagi – was held in good spirits, at times injected with Samoan humour.
